The first of our 3 main components to successful SEO -- KEYWORDS. Keywords are important because they determine the relevance of your site compared to the search phrase entered into the search engine.

Rule #1
Never use keywords that are unrelated to your content just to attract visitors. Here's why:

- you may attract visitors but once they realize it's not what they're there for they're gonna leave.
- you won't rank well for that keyword anyway because your website doesn't reflect relevance for it.

Rule #2
There IS such thing as having too many keywords. Just because you have 200 keywords does not mean that you will be ranked higher in the search engines. 5 highly relevant keywords will outrank 200 random keywords any day of the week.

Rule #3
It never hurts to do a little researching before you decide on your keywords, but NEVER overlook your keywords. They are a vital part of your rankings. There are several nifty little tools out there to help you decide on a good set of keywords. Some, like the Google keyword tool, even includes search engine data such as how many times the term is queried both locally and globally, along with the amount of competition the keyword is currently receiving.

While keywords, or the lack thereof, may not make or break your ranking position, they can play a vital role and push you just over the top to the next level. If you really want to be the best, you need to include everything, and by establishing keywords you can be sure the right visitors or customers are making their way to your site, and if you're using AdWords you can be sure you're getting the highest possibility of making a sale, because if someone goes to your site looking for strawberries and you're selling apples you're not likely to make a sale, but if you're selling strawberries, or even strawberry baskets your have a much higher chance of making a sale. Basically, keywords define what search terms your site appears under. There are, of course, different ways to use your keywords that are weighted differently in the algorithms but we'll get into that later. Right now we just want to establish a basic understanding of keywords. Again, never exclude the keywords step, both in the meta tag of your site and as a frequently used term.
